Europe produces over 11 million tonnes of coffee waste every year. Most of it ends up in landfill, where each tonne of spent coffee grounds (SCG) releases around 0.5 tonnes of CO₂. Italy alone is estimated to landfill 200–300 kilotonnes of coffee grounds annually, generating roughly 131,400 tonnes of CO₂. Add to that the hundreds of millions of tonnes of virgin fossil-based plastics produced globally each year — dominated by packaging, automotive, and consumer goods — and you get two waste streams, one organic and one fossil, both looking for a circular answer.
At Tau20, we were excited to work with Coffeefrom Srl, a circular- and social-economy startup based in Locate Triulzi, Milano, Italy, that transforms post-industrial coffee grounds into bio-based and recycled thermoplastic materials. Their compound family — Coffeefrom® Bio (PLA + 10–20% coffee, 100% biodegradable), Eco (recycled LDPE), Strong (HDPE, high thermal resistance), and Texture (PP, certified for food contact) — feeds injection moulding and 3D printing across packaging, automotive, tableware, and design. The key question quickly became: how can this circular concept be translated into impact evidence that B2B clients, impact investors, and public funders can actually rely on?

First, Tau20’s AI researched and pre-structured information on the company and its product portfolio, then we iterated with our impact expert and the Coffeefrom founders to map their contribution to three SDGs: SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). Then we structured a clear “impact-logic of change”: collect industrial spent coffee grounds → process into Coffeefrom® compounds → displace virgin fossil plastic + avoid landfill emissions + create inclusive jobs for fragile workers along the supply chain.
Tau20 uses the well-established IRIS+ framework and additionally AI to add to the framework, thus offering a tight set of metrics that startups like Coffeefrom can actually report:
– Non-hazardous waste avoided (tonnes of SCG diverted from landfill)
– GHG emissions of product vs. product replaced (tCO₂e)
– GHG reductions due to products sold (tCO₂e)
– Conventional plastic displaced (tonnes/year of fossil polymer substituted via Coffeefrom® granules)
– Inclusive employment (number and share of “fragile” workers across the supply chain)
Finally, Tau20 issued an Impact Readiness Index (IRX) result for Coffeefrom, packaged with a draft metrics plan and evidence roadmap — usable for impact VC due diligence, EU public funding applications, and B2B sustainability disclosures with industrial clients across packaging, automotive, and design.
